Without hesitation, Nia replied to her mother from the public email account, confirming that she would be in attendance. Then she busied herself with making travel arrangements, booking flights that had her in Lambert for a few days.

As she stowed away her tablet, Nia wondered if Andy was helping out. Reaching for her phone, she opened up the message app and read the recent messages.

He never mentioned his mother in their communication. She knew his mother's condition took a toll on him and she suspected that his visiting her in Europe was a means of escape. By being with her, he was avoiding slipping into a dark place.

Once or twice, she had seen the sadness creeping in and Nia would give him the space to experience it and let it go.

Nia was tempted to ask Andy about Mrs. Smith and the plans for her birthday. Her fingers poised over the QWERTY, only to return the display to the home screen. When he was ready to share more about his mother, to let Nia in, she would be there.

Being with Andy was becoming a practice in patience.
